Hi mastopeople,

I need help to have working screen sharing on my #debian laptop inside a #videoconference tab in #firefox or #chrome.
I'm sure it broke since I switched to #Sway on #Wayland.
I'm not sure if the browsers run natively or with Xwayland (they are not listed in `xlsclients`)

Any help appreciated, the simpler and more standard the better, I don't want to start downloading untrusted tools or compile things…

Devuan uses a compat library to provide libsystemd, so they can use Debian packages as is, without recompiling everything.

Every Debian package that linked to libsystemd, will run on Devuan with libelogind.

I think you won't encounter any problem in most cases, but the real gain is extremely small.

If you use #Devuan with sysvinit or openrc, I'd say just use #Debian instead, since Debian also support those two init systems.

Yes, a lot of work, but something that the likes of #debian could do over a couple of full releases (circa 4 years).
It would require things like the metadata of the app to include the necessary information to automate this, a bit like the proposed PURL - see phoronix.com/news/Fedora-45-Co…

For me, we are coming to a crunch point in #linux. Someone needs to decide if they want to continue with #systemd or move to something less commercially backed, someone needs to decide about #AI slop, someone needs to decide about enforced #wayland and enforced #pipewire (although the latter is not so bad).

We're at a crossroads, and if #linux is to continue to be a truly open platform, some things may need to change or fork, such that end users can have confidence that they're installing true open source software with little to no commercial interests being served, whilst protecting privacy etc.

Perhaps this is where the likes of #antix or #devuan can take up the mantle and improve their offering just a little to take it to the next logical step.

With all the AI slop getting into open source software, even respected ones, I feel we should have a new category in the usual separation between opensource and closed source, like in the debian non-free and cobtrib.

We now need a (free)-ai category, for those projects who finally decided to not care anymore. In reality, we don't even know if they can be categorized as free anymore since the AI has been trained with some various codebase with potential closed source license.

That would maybe make the community fork aggressively the projects who turned stupid.

It's a lot of work, though, and I don't know how maintenable it is.

For my shop machine, I'm now actively testing Debian 14 Testing w/ Xlibre and SonicDE. So far, so good. I use this machine for client work and it also gets to be my guinea pig for testing drawing tablet workflows. Both native Xlibre (via wacom) and Gaomon's proprietary driver work. I'm impressed with how snappy SonicDE is - first time using it today. Great work folks‼️
