Well, I guess I'm switching away from KDE for now. I ran the Wayland session for a while and it was mostly fine, but a crucial few emulators I run still have problems under it, so I have no choice but to use a desktop that still does X11. #kde #wayland #retrogaming

An X11-related bug issue I contributed to just got closed because the latest KDE release is Wayland-only.

Congrats to KDE but I am now gonna be violently booted to Wayland/XWayland which is not great for my workflow.

Some people are trying to work here!

And rely on closed-source commercial apps which are in no hurry to support Wayland with all of its quirks.

I am giving Wayland a proper try since KDE wants to force me to change. Expect this thread to be a rant, it's not like I'm stubborn sticking with X11 for no reason. (Arch, KDE Plasma)
So I logged in and opened Firefox and guess what, my KWin rule to prevent Firefox from going to the foreground does not work in the Wayland session even though it still exists. Didn't expect to find the first problem (I didn't know of already) within 10 seconds.

X11 servers and apps:
Battlefield tested, rock solid, damn stable.

#Wayland servers and apps:
Crashes early, crashes often, and many of them are vibe coded garbage, including many compositors.

Also, was there a way someone figured out how to get audio plugins working under #Wayland? We thought there was some project out there, and we're interested in it.

I mean, in Wayland mode, it crashes when you, for example, rotate a mesh. It also, as you move a mesh the slightest bit, will suddenly lurch the mesh off the screen. You're still attached to it. You can drag it back with the mouse like you're reeling in a trout. When you try to minimize a screen, it won't do it. You have to drag the screen somewhere else. Then it usually will. If it won't, drag it again.

I'm going back to X11 mode, where it still crashes, but with less stupidity along the way.

Unreal consistently gives Linux developers the middle finger.

I remember a time where #foss was synonym of openness and interoperability. This is less the case these days. #systemd gobs up every functionality it can. You could run @kde with another window manager, not anymore. #wayland requires WMs to be compositors. Not saying things were necessarily better before, but it's not an evolution I am happy with... 🤷‍♂️

It seems that Linux 7.3.x have a lot of regressions that breaks #wayland .

“
Uh, on GNOME it's like this, on KDE it's like this, on Hyprland it's like this. Oh right, there's an issue upstream on Hyprland, so we gotta use this workaround for now and switch back once that PR gets merged... Oh wait, #Wayland is like this, but X11 isn't... Hang on a sec, this part depends on that driver to work, so we need to prompt the user... Wait, no, we gotta make the user remember to enable modeset here or else it won't work anyway...”

When it took a compositor 5 years to support a very basic input configuration, you know the #wayland thing is extremely stupid.

The labwc project has released version 0.20.3 of its lightweight, stacking Wayland compositor inspired by Openbox.

This update adds support for libinput's native custom pointer acceleration profile, allowing users to configure accelProfile, motionCurve, scrollCurve, and fallbackCurve settings.

It also expands libinput configuration with clickfingerButtonMap and rotationAngle options, fixes a screen-locking input focus issue, and r…

Upgraded to PopOS 24.04 and Cosmic and kept getting stream freezes on OBS until I switched back to Cinammon + #x11

Curious if anyone got tips or had more success on how to make streaming stable on Cosmic and/or #Wayland in general

Behavior was basically ever few minutes video would freeze but audio was fine (Pipewire Window capture, OBS v 33 flatpak)

Googled a lot and only ran into audio troubleshooting or general "Use windows for streaming" advice

#Wayland continues to be trash that causes real problems for real people while "solving" non-problems for no one.

An X11 tool:
Write once and it works everywhere.

An #Wayland tool:
It only works on specific versions of a few compositors.
Users of other compositors have to write the tool all by their own.

When the propaganda of #wayland 2026 is exact the same with the propaganda of wayland 2018, you know those people are always lying.

“when I spawn a new Konsole window it will spawn on a random desktop and force me to switch there, not on the desktop I started it on.

And that sounds like a Konsole bug, but remember, #wayland is stupid so windows can't decide where they go, so maybe it's kwin?

but maybe not? because Dolphin et. al. all work normally?”

When I turn on my second screen, everything freezes periodically.
#Wayland should change their logo from a big W to a big L for loser. I've seen the Wayland logo more often than the Xorg logo and It's only day 4.

No I don't have a #Nvidia GPU. You cannot blame everything on Nvidia.

I love that #Wayland tutorials are already breaking on fundamental stuff.

look for wl_shell! I mean xdg_shell! I mean-- what a crock

When a compositor have to add specific support for several 3rd party apps, you know the #wayland thing is extremely stupid.

Disastrous Arch Linux and KDE Plasma 6.8 Update

ONLY UPDATE INSIDE A TTY!!!

I just updated to plasma 6.8 while I was inside the X11 session. The X11 session is gone in the new version. This caused my entire login session to terminate during the update.

My PC couldn't boot anymore because the Kernel, LTS Kernel and fallback images from /boot were gone. Pacman was terminated midway. I even ran it inside a tmux session but that didn't help.

#Wayland fanboys love useless eye candies, and they hate really useful workflows.
